Reading through the many internet blogs and talking to many Republicans, I find that many street savvy Republicans vehemently disagree with the media’s assessment of John McCain’s chance of winning in the general election if he should be the Republican nominee. Many even go so far as saying that he has zero chance of winning against Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama.
I also sense a spreading anger towards the media when Western states like Wyoming and Nevada received very little media attention compared to the Eastern states, among states that have already voted. I first thought this was an East versus West phenomena. However, even as I write this article at 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time on Saturday, February 2nd, Fox News and CNN are not showing continuously updated results of precincts reporting for the Republican caucuses in the state of Maine, like they did for the other states.
Since this legitimate anger is about states where Mitt Romney happens to be winning by more than 50% of the vote, I suspect that most of this anger will be translated into support for Mitt Romney on Super Tuesday. Reasons given by these angry Republicans that Mitt Romney has the best chance of beating Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama in the general election include the following:
Totally rejected is the hypothesis that since John McCain is the most liberal of the Republicans, he will garnish more Democratic and Independent votes than Mitt Romney. They point out that Ronald Reagan’s conservativism attracted the Reagan Democrats.
There is recognition that for a Republican to win the White House in 2008, he will have to win many Democratic votes by appealing to issues that are important to Democrats in this campaign – health care and change in Washington.
They acknowledge that Governor Mitt Romney, while working with an overwhelmingly controlled Democratic Massachusetts legislature, was able to provide private health insurance for all his citizens, without raising taxes. Did you notice that no issue other than health care was addressed until 40 minutes into the Democratic debate last Thursday, and that Hillary reaffirmed that this is her most important issue? They acknowledge that Mitt Romney is the only Republican that has the basis of substance, compassion, and mostly experience to champion innovations in free enterprise health care against the expensive socialized Hillary care.
They acknowledge that for 2008 only a Republican who is a Washington outsider can convince many Democrats he can change Washington for the better. Romney’s impressive leadership record of effecting positive change quickly in private business, as a volunteer in the Olympics, and as a Massachusetts governor will win over many Reagan Democrats.
They acknowledge that Mitt Romney has proven appeal to Democrats as he was elected in Massachusetts, a state that is only 12% Republican.
They acknowledge that all Americans historically, generally prefer Governors over Senators for President.
They acknowledge that by far Mitt Romney is the best Republican choice in economic matters, and that many Democrats are more willing to select a fiscal conservative that can improve their own personal pocketbooks.
They acknowledge the fact that the liberal media takes the opposite view point is the best evidence that Mitt Romney is the candidate they fear the most.
As for me, I have more faith in my own instincts and the common Republican than in the media pundits. This Super Tuesday I am casting my vote for the only Republican that I believe can not only unite a party, but also a Nation, Mitt Romney.
